Card Accounts

A Card Account is a limited-purpose account associated with a specific payment card. It serves as the underlying store of value or spending limit that powers transactions made using the card.

Depending on the card type, a Card Account may represent either:

  • A stored balance (for prepaid cards), or
  • A spending limit (for debit cards, where funds are drawn from a parent or external account)

The CleverCards Platform supports multiple types of Card Accounts to suit different use cases, including incentives, expense management, consumer payouts, and operational disbursements.

Types of Card Accounts

Each Card Account type has specific characteristics designed to meet particular operational or regulatory requirements:

Prepaid Single-Load Card Account

  • Contains a fixed balance of available funds.
  • Can be funded only once (no reloading).
  • Supports single or multiple transactions until the balance is exhausted.
  • Subject to minimum and maximum load limits.

Prepaid Reloadable Card Account

  • Maintains a balance that can be increased over time.
  • Supports multiple top-ups or reloading events.
  • Allows for single or multiple uses.
  • Enforced minimum and maximum load/reload limits.

Debit Card Account

  • Operates based on a predefined spend limit over a given time period (e.g., daily, weekly, or monthly).
  • Does not store funds directly; transactions draw from a parent or connected funding account.
  • Supports single or multiple transactions.
  • Enforces spend control limits defined per period.

Additional Considerations

  • Card Accounts may be subject to financial regulations and consumer protection laws, depending on the jurisdiction and intended use case.
  • Spending rules and controls—such as merchant category restrictions, geographic limits, or transaction caps—can be applied to a Card Account to enforce program-specific policies.
